Thoughts Have Consequences

a teaching rhyme
by Jerry Collier

We find it easy to just let life happen without realizing the consequences of what we ponder and the endpoints of the paths that we allow our minds to follow. Our minds (and hearts) are always traveling down paths and listening. But what paths are they on and to whom are they listening?

Your thoughts have consequences.
(Contemplate! Think this through!)
The thoughts you embrace—
They soon form the base
Of what becomes your worldview.
So if you then think the wrong things,
And pondering—there you stay.
Do not be surprised
If the way devised
Will darken your path to gray.
It will cloud your understanding, 1
Though all appears to be well.
You try. You pretend,
You often defend;
Yet dark is the end of the trail.

When “His” is the way that you trod;
The path is level and firm.
The truth of God’s word,
Embracingly heard,
Enlightens you while you learn.
As God’s thoughts envelop your mind,
And pondering—there you stay;
You’ll not be surprised,
And could have surmised
That God’s lamp will light your way.
It will clear your understanding;
The fog lifting more each day.
No need for pretense.
This path makes more sense,
And purpose replaces dismay.

“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight; keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them. . . Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.” Prov. 4:20-22, 26 (NIV)
