Faith and Mood

(Companion to “Faith and Reason”)

a teaching rhyme
by Jerry Collier

Mood and emotion,
A powerful potion,
And faith is not its twin.
Moods can doubt
And questionings sprout;
Faith taking it on the chin.

When faith faces loss,
Cause mood has been boss,[1]
Remember where faith finds ground.
Of moods beware;
His promise is where
Faithing stands  firm and sound.

[1] “. . . unless you teach your moods ‘where they get off,’ you can never be a sound Christian or even a sound atheist, but just a creature dithering to and fro, with its beliefs really dependent on the weather and the state of its digestion.  Consequently one must train the habit of Faith.”  C. S. Lewis, p. 130, The Joyful Christian.
