There is a way . . .

(humanism–a theme song)

a teaching rhyme
by Jerry Collier

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death.  Proverbs
14:12 NIV

I.
There is a way that seems so right to man,
With empathy, a kind and bleeding heart,
Does not condemn or judge, but understand
That man is central; has the leading part.
Religion stifles and it is not smart
To give man rules, or put him to the test;
To place restraints, to prove or set apart,
But leave him free to do what he thinks best.

There is no god but man,
And he it is that can
Bring peace to earth,
Give it new birth,
They say, “Praise be to man!”

Jerusalem—no longer has control,
As people build new shrines to take its place,
Diversity and tolerance extol;
This standard of great progress to embrace.
As men join hands with all the human race,
To nurture and express his dulcet art
Of dialogue; respect each others place,
Affirm the basic good that shrouds the heart.

There is no god but man,
And he it is that can
Bring peace to earth,
Give it new birth,
They say, “Praise be to man!”

To self-determine is the key to all.
In commonality will answers come.
And Darwin progress, though it be a crawl,
Will bring to man deliverance from the scum.
And moral change decided by the sum
Of human species, global in its scope,
(As culture beats its anthrocentric drum!)
Will place in man its future and its hope.

There is no god but man,
And he it is that can
Bring peace to earth,
Give it new birth,
They say, “Praise be to man!”

II.
This way that seems so right and good to man
Will leave him shattered and no longer whole,
And take him to a place he did not plan;
A place where he’ll be harmed with death to soul. (1)
As trust in man continues in control,
And sinful man does not live as he ought,
Ignoring evil soon will take its toll,
For man is not as good as he had thought.

III.
The God who IS has sent His Son in love
To tell the truth; that mankind went astray
And needs for Him to save the man out of
His darkness and provide a lighted way.
To make man god will not his fears allay,
But leave him hungry  for a better day.
It’s only trust in Jesus, God’s own Lamb,
Who died and rose, that gives new life to man.

There is a God; not man,
And
He it is that can
Make all things right,
The future bright,
Through Christ, the true God-man!

(1)  Isa 50:10-11 illustrates this point. Verse 10 describes what the Lord asks of us:  “Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant?  Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God. “  Verse 11 describes the result of those who walk by their own light (Humanism):   “But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze.  This is what you shall receive from my hand:  You will lie down in torment.” NIV  (emphasis mine).  The way may seem like the right way to go but the end is not very pleasant.
