I’m Free!

(based on Romans 6-8:14)

a teaching rhyme
by Jerry Collier

Oh what a wretched man I am.
I do what I don’t want to do.
The ‘law of sin’ has a hold on me—
distorting my point of view.
I know that God’s laws are perfectly good.
His laws I desire to keep.
Yet to the wrong my mind returns—
dismayed that my sins run so deep.
But this great message then speaks out.
I can’t believe what I hear.
Listen to what it says to me.
The message is not unclear!

“No condemnation; none at all!
I nailed your sins to a tree.

The law of sin and death—no more!
My Spirit of Life sets you free.

I took the sin that shattered your life
and placed it on my Son.

Your sin, with Him, was slain on the cross.
I wept as your freedom was won.

My righteous requirements had to be met.
I did what the law could not do.

I sent my Son to kill the sin;
and my Spirit to make you new.”

No condemnation!  Did you hear?
Jesus has set me free!
The law that kept me a slave to sin—
no longer has hold of me!
This body of sin that I drag around
is only a lifeless shell.
It lost its source,
its pow’r to enforce.
Shall I treat it as though it is well?

I owe no debt to the ‘sinful man’;
his enticement—I will flee.
And I, by the Spirit, can put to death
the betrayal he urges in me.
Do you now see and understand?
To sin I am no more bound!
I have become a servant of God.
‘In Christ’ my identity’s found.
Here is what happened to ‘sinful man’.
Yes, he was nailed to the cross.
And now that I have been freed from him–
He is no longer the boss!

John 8:34-37
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
