Did You Know?

a teaching rhyme
by Jerry Collier

In the beginning was God the Word
by the Word was all things made.
The Word was sent
in an earthly tent
the Eternal
in flesh displayed.

The Word in a manger
babe undisturbed
Did He dream dreams that were sweet?
Did He know then
what awaited Him?
Did He know that for all He would weep?

Loudly He wept and all could hear
when approaching David’s town
“Eternal peace
was within your reach
but you have turned it down.”

“O Jerusalem
for you I weep.
Your sins I gladly would blot.
Like a mother hen
I would take you in
but you stood there
and you would not.”

“My weeping is not
for you alone
my tears
for all of mankind
who turning from Me
refusing to see
yet choose to stay blind.”

Sweet heavenly child
all cuddly and warm
with a baby’s cry.
But did you know
to the cross you would go?
Did you know that for all you would die?

There can be no Christmas without Calvary!
