Slipping Away

A nation once founded on solid ground
strong in conviction
wore faith as a crown
but soundness gave in to a slow degradation
eating away at the heart of the nation
and jeopardizing its soul

strengthened in hard times
darkness and bleakness
sprouting of stateliness
from each hard learned lesson
a future of brightness . . .
’til with subtle aggression
it turned from the God of its birth

with political hacks
in drowsy awakeness
pretending a discipline
groping faux greatness
and the courts of the land
with binding decisions
say ‘no’ to the sacred
with wholesale revisions
forgetting from whence they came

with marriage in sickness
hearts growing callus
clinics with swords leave a mother childless
while morals descending
search for a bottom
producing of grapes from the vine of Sodom
fermenting a poisonous wine

with sin guised as freedom
with little contrition
and cultural addictions
a common condition . . .
by scenes of our crumbling foundation
a sadness sets in at the sight of this nation. . .
slipping . . .
slipping away

~JD Collier

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth —  he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.”  Ps 33:12-15  NIV

“You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.” Deut 32:18
